Big Post World War II American History Reading List

Note of Explanation: I have stopped the reading list material at 1976. There is a gray area between current events and history. I have placed the line at 1976 and the end of the Ford administration because beyond this point, opinions about events of yesterday are too heavily blurred by the events of today. The post Watergate era of American history is important, but it is still unfolding history. We are blessed that President Carter is still alive and the memory of President Reagan is still with us. Many of the issues they struggled with are issues we still struggle with today. This is obviously not a perfect demarcation, especially for social history, but I believe it is a reasonable one.

There are two exceptions to this. The first is the Cold War. Since this era of history can be considered closed with the fall of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact alliance here I have included books up to 1991. The second is the American Space Program. Although this is an ongoing program, it is non-controversial and here I have included information on Skylab and the American Space Shuttle program until its end in 2011.
